The mother who sensed the danger
A three-year-old worsens quickly. The examination shows no clear signs, but the mother insists. Pedro listens, sends them to the Emílio Ribas, and the diagnosis is meningitis.
“It was you, a good and careful mother, who alerted me to how serious the illness was.”
Pedro Moretti Guedes · Reminiscências de um Médico
A three-year-old child got worse quickly. On examination, Pedro found no clear signs. The mother, however, insisted something was wrong: she knew her son and knew that this listlessness was not normal.
Pedro listened. He told her to take the child at once to the Hospital Emílio Ribas, the reference centre for infections. The diagnosis was meningitis, a disease in which hours make the difference. When he was credited with the diagnosis, he replied: "It was you, a good and careful mother, who alerted me to how serious the illness was."
