The youngest patient

A child of two years and eight months, a distended belly and a surgical decision he never forgot.

“He was my youngest patient ever.”

In Bragança Paulista, Pedro saw a child of two years and eight months. The belly was distended and there were signs of intestinal obstruction. At that age the symptoms mislead: the child cannot say where it hurts, and appendicitis is rare enough not to be the first hypothesis.

The clinical work-up led him to operate. It was acute appendicitis. Pedro kept the case as that of his youngest patient, and told it not as a surgical feat but as a reminder: examine carefully even when age suggests something else.

This text is an editorial adaptation of an account preserved in the family compilation "Reminiscências de um Médico" (2008). It is autobiographical memory, not a medical record or medical advice.

Who created this memorial

Felipe Guedes did not grow up with his father. He knows Pedro through the stories, and loves him for them. What he keeps most is the doctor who treated for free those who could not pay: a way of looking at people, not at money, that Felipe carries with him.
