What is the right path for medical care in Brazil?

A reflection on outpatient care, salaries, structure and the organisation of medical care.

1 min read

The question in the title, "What is the right path for medical care in Brazil?", is answered with the experience of someone who worked in a private office, an outpatient clinic and a hospital. Pedro discusses outpatient care, doctors' salaries, physical structure and the organisation of the network.

In 2005 the SUS was 15 years old and the Family Health Strategy was expanding. Pedro, a family doctor by vocation long before the term became a programme, defended front-door care, with bonds and continuity, as the path that avoids queues and unnecessary admissions.

The text speaks directly to "The hospital outpatient clinic" and "Changes in health care", from 2006. Together they form his view of how the system should work.

This article is part of the historical archive of Pedro Moretti Guedes. It should be read as a document of its time: Medicine, pharmacology and health recommendations have changed since publication.

Who created this memorial

Felipe Guedes did not grow up with his father. He knows Pedro through the stories, and loves him for them. What he keeps most is the doctor who treated for free those who could not pay: a way of looking at people, not at money, that Felipe carries with him.
