Diarrhoea
Diarrhoea, hydration and warning signs, especially in children, in a text preserved among the archive's health clippings.
In the 1990s, diarrhoea was one of the main causes of hospital admission and death among small children in Brazil, especially in areas without sanitation. The 1997 text treats the subject with the urgency of someone who saw those cases arrive at the office and the emergency room.
The central point is hydration. Oral rehydration salts, distributed by the public network since the previous decade, changed the prognosis of the disease, and Pedro explains when they are enough and when care must be sought. The warning signs, such as dry mouth, sunken eyes, listlessness and absence of urine, appear as a guide for parents.
It is a family doctor's text: it speaks to mother and father, not to the specialist. The same listening that appears in the story of the child with meningitis, where an attentive mother makes the difference, is here in the form of guidance.
This article is part of the historical archive of Pedro Moretti Guedes. It should be read as a document of its time: Medicine, pharmacology and health recommendations have changed since publication.
The original clipping is preserved by the family and will be published here once the scan can be checked against the original.
